OEM Camshafts, Lifters, & Parts

The camshaft is one part of your vehicle's engine. They're made up of two parts: a cam (or lobe) and a shaft -- thus the source of their name. What they do is simple. They activate the engine cylinders' intake and exhaust valves. How they do that? More complex.

Ford Camshafts Explained

Types of Ford Camshaft Setups

Your camshaft is located inside the cylinder head. With a single overhead cam engine, there's one cam for each bank, with the cam placed between the valve stems. A dual overhead cam engine has two cams per bank, with them situated directly over the valve stems. This allows one cam serves the intake valves while the other serves the exhaust valves.

How Ford Camshafts Work

When the shaft part of your camshaft turns, the cams push the valves open in sync with the crankshaft gears. That synchronization occurs thanks to the timing belt, which connects the camshafts to the crankshaft. However, newer Ford models may have a more durable timing chain rather than a timing belt.

What Ford Camshafts Are Made Of

Typically, camshafts are made of steel. That makes them far less likely to fail than other engine parts. However, they can go bad and negatively affect your engine's performance.

How to Spot Camshaft Issues

Signs of camshaft failure include:

  • Worn lifters failing to lift the valve as fully as they should, which may be identified by a clattering or tapping noise in the valve cover
  • Engine misfires and increased emissions due to worn cam lobes that don't fully open the valves
  • A broken camshaft that may have been caused by a camshaft seizure -- which can then cause serious damage to other engine parts
